BRIDGEWATER. NJ - More than a patriotic gesture, this will be a team effort to help support US military personnel deployed overseas.

Members of the Somerset Patriots, AA affiliate of the New York Yankees, will join Operation Shoebox New Jersey volunteers to stuff 500 care packages with snack items and toiletries at TD Bank Ballpark on Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m.

Last year, 15 members of the Somerset Patriots participated.

Volunteers are invited to step up to the plate and help out. Show up at the ballpark and join the assembly line. There is no age limit, but children must be accompanied by adults.

The concourse will feature an assembly line with bins loaded with the supplies that will be stuffed into the care packages. The team members and other volunteers will form a single line and select items from each of the bins, and placed into gallon plastic bags, which will be dropped into the boxes to be shipped overseas.

The process repeats itself dozens of times,

Last year's  Patriots lineup included:

  • Tomas Frick
  • Mason Vinyard
  • Trent Sellers
  • Brendan Jones
  • Kelly Austin
  • Garrett Martin
  • Manuel Palencia
  • Carlos Lagrange
  • Diomedes Hernandez
  • Dylan Jasso
  • Ben Hess
  • Elmer Rodriguez
  • Luis Pacheco
  • Corey Saccone
  • Derek Woodley

The packing event will commemorate 21 years of public service to US troops deployed around the world by Operation Shoebox New Jersey, an all-volunteer organization based in Central New Jersey. During that time, tens of thousands of volunteers have donated time and effort to collect donations and prepare the care packages for shipping.

Since 2005, Operation Shoebox New Jersey has shipped over 200,000 care packages to US military personnel around the world.

Further information is available by calling (908) 255-4172.

Operation Shoebox New Jersey also asks if you know of anyone who is serving in the military to please send that person's APO or FPO overseas address to Operation Shoebox New Jersey at P.O. Box 273, Somerville to enable shipment of care packages.
