Greater Somerset County YMCA Welcomes All During Welcoming Week

Basking Ridge, New Jersey, September 25, 2026 – Greater Somerset County YMCA joined Welcoming America, YMCAs and organizations across the country to celebrate Welcoming Week, held September 10–19. Celebrated each September, Welcoming Week brings neighbors together to build connections, promote cross-cultural understanding and highlight the benefits of creating communities where everyone feels welcome.

As part of the celebration, Greater Somerset County YMCA hosted a series of events and activities focused on diversity, connection and community. The third annual Unity Day, held at Hillsborough YMCA and hosted by the Hispanic Latino Employee Resource Group, kicked off the week’s festivities. Staff and community members enjoyed music, food, games and cultural experiences representing countries and traditions from around the world. Y staff hosted tables featuring information about their countries of origin, cultural artwork and foods celebrating their heritage.

The week also included an interactive workshop focused on cross-cultural communication, presented by Literacy Volunteers of Somerset County, a nonprofit organization that trains volunteer tutors to teach everyday English skills to local adults. The workshop provided practical tools for strengthening cultural awareness and sensitivity while exploring common cultural differences related to etiquette, eye contact, personal space, compliments, small talk, gestures, time and communication styles. Learning strategies to improve cross-cultural communication and strengthen teamwork in diverse workplace settings.

Throughout Welcoming Week, members participated in activities across Greater Somerset County YMCA branches, including signing Welcoming Pledges, identifying their countries of origin on global maps and participating in the Passport to Wellness initiative. Branches also hosted health and wellness sessions, sports and arts trivia, member appreciation pop-ups, screenings, pool parties, social gatherings, community resource days and open houses.

“At the Y, we open our doors to the community through a variety of special activities to connect with our neighbors and strengthen our community,” said Darnell Hayes. “Welcoming Week is a reminder we empower everyone, no matter who they are or where they’re from, by ensuring access to resources, relationships and opportunities for all to learn, grow and thrive.”
