Manager of Recreation and Therapeutic Recreation
Description
Under the direction of the Administrator of Leisure and Community Services, plan, promote, implement, and evaluate the operation of the park system recreation facilities, including Warrenbrook Pool, two tennis centers, pickleball courts, spray park, putting course, and paddle boats. Responsible for the overall development and execution of regional recreation-based programming, which utilizes general-use parks and designated facilities within the Somerset County Park Commission. The Recreation Manager is expected to produce events sponsored by the Park Commission, including but not limited to the Fourth of July and Summer Concert Series. This position is also responsible for the Commission’s Therapeutic Recreation Program, which includes two full-time Program Coordinators and offers programs and programming support to individuals with disabilities within participating municipalities.
The Recreation Department is responsible for the operation of a variety of recreation facilities, including two tennis facilities, pickleball courts, a swimming pool, a spray park, miniature golf, and paddle boating. The Recreation Department includes a full-time Permit Coordinator and Administrative Assistant, along with over 100 part-time and seasonal employees. The Department offers permitting, lessons, tournaments, wellness programs, lectures, concerts, and special events. Permits are issued for picnic facilities, fields, food trucks, and park use. The Manager approves permits for groups who rent park facilities to conduct special events, the Showmobile, utilize the park facilities for commercial filming and/or photography, use the flying field for model aircraft and approved drones, and run tennis leagues. There are approximately 75,000 visitations to recreation facilities and events, and the facilities generate income of over $850,000.
Qualifications
College degree in recreation management, with a minimum of five years of managerial experience. Experience in recreation and facility management, staff development, program planning and implementation, budget planning, overseeing capital improvement plans, and basic marketing. Experience in interacting with community groups to foster relationships and shared services. Ability to supervise staff and departmental programs. The ability to work with the general public is crucial. Must be well organized and have the ability to multi-task.
Must possess NRPA Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) certification or possess the qualifications and obtain this certification within one year. Must be a Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or be willing to obtain certification within six months of employment. Must pass the NJ Department of Health Pool Directors Course. Ability to adjust work schedule for evening and/or weekends as required for the efficient operation of programs, facilities, permitting, and events. Must have a valid NJ driver’s license
