About SSAAM

The Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum (SSAAM) is a history reclamation, cultural preservation, and community engagement organization dedicated to telling the story of the African American community of the Sourland Mountain region. Through research, public programming, and partnerships, SSAAM brings forward stories that have too often been overlooked, ensuring they are preserved, interpreted, and shared with future generations.

Position Overview

The Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum (SSAAM) is a leading voice in preserving and sharing the history of the African American community of the Sourland Mountain region. As we expand our impact, we are seeking a Community Programs Manager to help bring this history to life through dynamic public programs and partnerships.

The Community Programs Manager is a central and highly collaborative role responsible for shaping SSAAM’s public-facing work. Sitting at the intersection of education, history, exhibits, and community engagement, this position translates research and interpretation into meaningful, accessible experiences while building partnerships and identifying opportunities to grow programmatic impact and sustainability.

This role is supported through a combination of organizational funding, grants, and program-generated revenue, and includes a strong focus on developing and sustaining programmatic resources over time.

Key Responsibilities

Program Leadership & Execution

  • Oversee SSAAM’s flagship programs, including seasonal events and signature community gatherings.
  • Design, plan, and implement public programs that reflect SSAAM’s mission and interpretive priorities.
  • Develop and manage a comprehensive annual calendar of events and educational offerings.

Partnerships & Community Engagement

  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with artists, historians, educators, cultural institutions, and community partners.
  • Identify and cultivate opportunities for programmatic partnerships and co-created initiatives.
  • Represent SSAAM in community and professional settings to strengthen regional connections.

Revenue & Funding Development

  • Identify and pursue opportunities for grant funding, sponsorships, and earned revenue tied to programs and partnerships.
  • Collaborate with development leadership to support grant proposals, reporting, and partnership cultivation.
  • Contribute to the long-term sustainability of SSAAM’s programming through thoughtful program design and resource development.

Program Management & Operations

  • Develop and manage program budgets, timelines, and deliverables.
  • Oversee logistics and execution of events in collaboration with staff and volunteers.
  • Ensure alignment between programming and SSAAM’s broader strategic priorities and available resources.

Internal Leadership & Coordination

  • Chair SSAAM’s Education Committee, guiding programmatic direction and integration across initiatives.
  • Collaborate closely with the Staff Historian, Youth Program Administrator, and Tour & Exhibit Manager to ensure consistency across interpretation, education, and visitor experience.
  • Support and guide staff and volunteers involved in program delivery.

Qualifications

  • SSAAM values multiple ways of knowing and encourages candidates with creative, community-based, and non-traditional backgrounds to apply.
  • Bachelor’s degree in history, education, museum studies, nonprofit management, or a related field or equivalent professional and/or lived experience.
  • Experience in public programming, community engagement, museum work, nonprofit management, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, partnerships, and timelines.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
  • Experience with grant-funded programs, sponsorships, or revenue-generating initiatives is highly desirable.

Desired Attributes

  • Passion for history, cultural preservation, and community-centered work.
  • Experience with creative or interdisciplinary approaches to storytelling and interpretation
  • Strategic thinker who can connect mission to execution
  • Collaborative and relationship-driven
  • Organized and detail-oriented
  • Creative in developing engaging public experiences
  • Comfort working in a growing organization where programs are shaped in alignment with funding opportunities

Why This Role Matters

This is a unique opportunity to help shape how history is experienced in the community.
